Leadership Coaching: How to Stop Procrastination as a Leader, instead be a “Conscious Procrastinator”

Today we are going to address an aspect that affects all of us in our lives, but as leaders, it can be very destructive. The subject is how to stop procrastination as a leader.

A conscious procrastinator is not about being lazy. Lazy means that you can’t be bothered. It is passive.

Procrastination comes from Latin – Procrastinate, the verb meaning “to put off until tomorrow.”

Procrastination as a leader is a specific choice you make to avoid doing something – a task that needs to be accomplished by a specific time or which has a deadline attached to it. You use delay tactics, you stall and push off what you know you have to do, but you can’t seem to be able to get it done. Leadership coaching is one of the ways to stop procrastination in leadership.

In some cases, it is chronic and can be very debilitating. In other words, it drains all your energy and makes you very weary, even exhausted just thinking about what you need to do.

Let me give you a couple of simple examples:
– You have a report to write, or you have a difficult call to make – to your boss, to a colleague, to a client, but you cannot seem to get it done, so it keeps trotting around endlessly in your head.
– If you run your own business, you will totally understand this one, you have to get the end of year documents to your accountant, but that requires gathering all the information, and putting them into a form they understand, and you let the clock run down. Clearly, the way to deal with this is to be better organized and do it on a regular, monthly basis.

So, why is it important to address stop procrastinating as a leader?

One important reason is that you delay making important or key strategic decisions. It could be that you are a successful leader who want absolutely all the information before you decide, but by the time you dare overcome procrastination as a leader, it could simply be too late! Again, leadership coaching will guide you in the right direction to stop procrastinating as a leader.

Let me however clarify that procrastination in leadership, if used consciously and effectively, is in fact a positive thing through leadership coaching. The key is to know when you are using it and the impact it might have. You have to be what I would call a “Conscious Procrastinator”.

An example would be when you have a difficult situation or person to deal with. You certainly do not want to charge into it without leaving a few hours, days or maybe even a couple of weeks to go by, so long as you are aware of what you are doing and why. Leadership coaching tends to make you more aware of these kinds of leadership development situations. You should also have weighed up the consequences of not doing anything about the matter right away.

My advice would simply to tell them that they should come up with a solution and you can discuss it together. That way you through leadership coaching, you teach them and at the same time it does not land on your desk, and you waste time trying to find a moment to address the problem.

Another strategic way could be in dealing with the deluge of emails we get each day. By deliberately not responding to some, the person sending it solves the problem themselves, or it allows you time to come up with the answer if it is something you do need to resolve.

It is important to remember that procrastinating as a leader is not simply about putting off doing things, it is about putting off, delaying or avoiding doing IMPORTANT, OR HIGH PRIORITY tasks or projects. There is a big difference.

Often procrastination in leadership is because the task or project is hard, or boring/uninteresting or does not motivate them. Incorporate consistent leadership coaching to build your leadership skills and leadership development, so perform optimally.

What do you do about procrastination? My suggestions:
STEP #1: Acknowledge its presence. Recognize that it exists and has grabbed a hold of you. It is about your Mindset.
STEP #2: Practice Promising yourself a reward for completing the task that you were finding difficult
STEP #3: Have an Accountability Partner
STEP #4: Take Action
STEP #5: Use a List. I have a list that we can share with you. It helps you to list the 6 Most Important Actions for the day, the week, the month, and the quarter
